He is the author of "Prisoners: A Story of Friendship and Terror" and a winner of the National Magazine Award for reporting. He has covered the Middle East as a national correspondent for the Atlantic and as a staff writer for the New Yorker. Goldberg began his career at the Washington Post. He later wrote a column for the Jerusalem Post, covered the Mafia for New York magazine, and wrote for several years for the New York Times Magazine. Leon Frankel, a native of St. Paul, served as a pilot during WWII flying 25 missions as a carrier-based naval aviator in a torpedo bomber. Leon was awarded the Navy Cross and Distinguished Flying Cross for his aerial bravery in sinking a Japanese cruiser and for engaging in a running battle with Japanese Zeros protecting his squadron commander who was flying a damaged plane.

In 1948, Leon left Minot, ND, to volunteer for Israel's first air squadron - the 101 - and protect the newborn state against almost impossible odds in its War of Independence. As a "Machalnik," Frankel flew 25 missions for Israel before returning to the United States. Leon is featured in Nancy Spielberg's documentary, Above and Beyond, which tells the story of the 101 Squadron and the birth of the Israel Air Force. Click here to watch the Above and Beyond trailer.

Please join us in honoring Leon as a pilot hero of the United States and Israel. Leon has been married to Ruth Kozberg for 63 years and they have two children, Robbi and Mark, and two grandchildren, Jacob and Rebecca.
